Winsor Music is proud to announce a Memorial and Benefit Concert to honor and celebrate the life of the late Cynthia H. Livingston. Proceeds will be used to establish The Cynthia Community Outreach Fund at Winsor Music. The Cynthia Fund will be used to support Winsor’s programs to engage with and mentor young musicians, perform in local hospitals and retirement homes, and create new works building on themes of community and inclusion. Cynthia firmly believed in Winsor Music’s mission to connect with the greater Boston community through outreach and education, and in the healing power of music and its value in today’s world. 

This Concert is sponsored by her husband, Dr. Richard Shader, their family, and by the performing artists who all were Cynthia’s friends and admirers. The concert will include music close to Cynthia’s heart and a premiere of a new work by John Harbison written in celebration of Cynthia. This event is free, however tickets are required and donations are encouraged.

We are thrilled to have a new piece by deVon  Russell Gray (dVRG), a multi-instrumentalist  who is classically trained as well as a member  of the acclaimed live hip hop band Heiruspecs.  Gray is a musical polyglot organically fusing  contemporary classical, jazz, hip hop, Afrofuturistic, and popular music performance practices and styles. His music takes listeners on a  deeply resonant journey, and he approaches  newness with a refreshing and enlightening  sense of mystery, wonder, and beauty. This  concert will take the audience back in time,  step by step linking dVRG with his influences, teachers and those who came before them. The program will trace this musical lineage from contemporary music back to the 18th  century. The evening will end with a piece by the next generation - a collaboration with Project STEP students, dVRG and Winsor Music  that will celebrate the connections between generations of creative  artists!

This eclectic program features acoustic  instruments showcasing unique works all using  electronic sounds. Due to popular demand, we  will feature an encore performance of Natacha  Diels’ What do you Want to see Today? This  whimsical piece about the intersection of art  and Artificial Intelligence defies genre and  was so loved by the audience that we are  excited to perform it again! John Adams’ John’s  Book of Alleged Dances is an exuberant group  of dances that have humorous titles like Stubble  Crotchet and Alligator Escalator. In Mark Applebaum’s inventive work, Aphasia, the soloist performs an  elaborately choreographed set of hand gestures against the  background of pre-recorded tape. Other works on the program from  composers Marc Mellits and Winsor’s own Rane Moore will continue  to showcase the talents of the performers in surprising ways. This  will be an event to remember!

For our first concert, we are delighted to present  a lively program that celebrates the timeless connection between music and dance. Eric Nathan’s Dancing with J.S. Bach II will feature Winsor Music  founder and celebrated oboist Peggy Pearson.  This newly created dance suite, comprised of  various J.S. Bach keyboard works and orchestrated by Nathan “celebrates Bach’s keyboard music  from an orchestral vantage point and illuminates  connections between movements Bach composed  years apart.” We will also premiere a new work by  composer Lavell Blackwell. On the Impulse to Move takes inspiration from John Adams and Stevie  Wonder, and draws from Blackwell’s experience as  a musician, composer and lyricist. Rounding out the program we’ve  chosen György Ligeti’s Old Hungarian Ballroom Dances as we commemorate  the 100th anniversary of his birth. Written while he was a student at Budapest Musical Academy, this early work pays homage to his deep affection for  Hungarian folk music. This exciting program also includes a new Song for the  Spirit by composer Yu-Hui Chang.

Kevin Harris is a Boston and New York based jazz pianist and composer. Mr. Harris plays a distinctive combination of traditional  and contemporary music that seeks to celebrate the musical influences of Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis intersecting with  J.S. Bach, Scott Joplin, and the folkloric African rhythms of the Caribbean. “Pulse” is a large, compelling chamber composition  combining improvised and fully notated music. In Winsor’s twenty-year history of commissioning new works, “Pulse” will be  the first piece directly linked to jazz. This project is made possible by a Live Arts Boston grant from the Boston Foundation.  For the larger program we have chosen two works that complement Harris’ composition and echo both its spiritual and  secular themes. The concert will open with an arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s organ prelude “Nun komm’ der Heiden  Heiland.” This deeply personal piece keeps the listener moving through an ever changing musical landscape. The next piece, “Joy  Boy” by Julius Eastman evokes the excitement the composer felt while encountering a new crush. Following intermission, we will  bring together all the musicians to present Harris’ newly composed work, further exploring and revealing these innately human themes.

Her music defies genre—it is pure innovation and imagination.The program will also include the premiere of David Sanford’s complete work, Dearest One, Thou Art My Star. which was commissioned by Castle of Our Skins and Winsor Music as a part of the “Dream-Visions” program with Project STEP in 2021. The New York Times included a work of Sanford’s as one of the “25 Best Classical Music Tracks of 2019” and we are thrilled to play you his new piece in its entirety. Works by Satie, Stravinsky, Boulanger, and Ravel round out this selection of innovative composers

Craig’s Schubertiade honors legendary Boston conductor and founder of Emmanuel Music Craig Smith and will feature two extraordinary young artists, Daniel McGrew and Sophia Zhou. Daniel was a winner of the 2021 Young Concert Artists International auditions.  He gave his Washington D.C. and New York City debuts with Sophia in December, and both artists received rave reviews. All proceeds go to the Winsor Music Scholarship fund.

This unique program features composers with strong Boston ties. We will premiere a new work by Yu-Hui Chang, whose work has been performed worldwide and is “characterized by energy, precision, ingenious effects, and vibrant colors – all in the pursuit of a deep connection with humanity.” Eric Chasalow is recognized for his innovative work that combines traditional instruments with computer generated sounds. We will premiere his Ghost Songs, a deeply personal work described as both fascinating and haunting. The second half of the program features works by Florence Price, as well as Edward MacDowell, Arthur Foote, Horatio Parker and Amy Beach, who were members of the Boston Six, a group of classical-music composers who lived during the late-19th and early-20th centuries in and around Boston, Massachusetts. Their work is pivotal in the development of an American classical idiom that stands apart from its European ancestors.

For our first concert, we are delighted to be joined by pianist Heng-Jin Park and violinist Irina Muresanu, two  members of the acclaimed Boston Trio. Ms. Muresanu is a frequent performer of new music, especially  American composers, and is renowned for her elegant and passionate performances. Ms. Park has previously performed with Winsor Music and is the founding member of the Boston Trio. She has been described by Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe as “a centered musician with uncommon control over the sonorous possibilities of her instrument; she plays boldly with a full spectrum of colors. This diverse program showcases the virtuosity and musical charm of these talented performers

Winsor Music’s collaboration with Castle of our Skins and Project STEP continues with an online concert from Rockport Music at the stunning Shalin Liu Performance Center tomorrow, May 27 at 7pm. This lecture-performance will feature the British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and his lush Clarinet Quintet. Rane and Gabby, along with Castle of our Skins director Ashleigh Gordon, will talk about the piece and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s life. We are thrilled that Christian Casiano from Project STEP joins us for this performance of Coleridge-Taylor’s exquisite work!

Winsor joins Boston’s acclaimed New Music Sinfonietta, Sound Icon, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut for an online concert celebrating Beethoven’s 250th.
